| Frequently Asked Questions
Who developed WinXSPRO?
The latest version 3.0 of
WinXSPRO was developed by the USDA Forest Service, Stream
Systems Technology Center. WinXSPRO is Government-produced
software in the public domain and is provided "as-is"
without warranty of any kind, including, but not limited to,
the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for
a particular purpose. The user assumes all responsibility
for the accuracy and suitability of this program for a specific
application.
Is technical support available?
Limited technical
support is available from USDA Forest Service, Washington
Office Watershed, Fish, Wildlife, Air, & Rare Plants Staff,
Streams Systems Technology Center, Fort Collins, CO. The preferred
method of contact for obtaining support is to send an e-mail
to rmrs_stream@fs.fed.us requesting "WinXSPRO Support"
in the subject line.
Will data input files from previous versions of WinXSPRO
work with version 3.0?
Yes, but to a limited extent. For
example, basic cross-section data can still be used but you
will need to rename the filename with a *.sec extension instead
of using *.dat. However, because of some changes to computational
and output routines between this and previous versions, other
aspects may not work seamlessly.
Can I import spreadsheet data into WinXSPRO?
Yes,
"Appendix B, Using WinXSPRO With Spreadsheet Programs,"
of the User's Manual explains how to do this.
Can I use long file names for my input files?
The use of excessively long file names (e.g., Clear_Creek_at_USFS_Forest Boundary.sec) while convenient to identify the location of cross-sections, may cause the program to fail to execute. Although the program accepts filenames more than eight characters in length acceptable to Windows, there is a limit to what the program can handle. File names limited to eight characters should always work.
Can I have my data files on a remote server?
WinXSPRO was designed to run as a stand-alone application on a personal computer. While it may handle files located on servers, it's best to have your data files in a folder on the PC running the program.
Will WinXSPRO 3.0 work with on Vista or Windows 7 operating systems?
Yes, but only on 32-bit Vista and Windows 7 operating systems. WinXSPRO 3.0 will not work on 64-bit Vista and Windows 7 operating systems. Currently, there is no plan to update/upgrade WinXSPRO so that it is compatible with 64-bit Vista and Windows 7 operating systems as the USDA Forest Service has no immediate plans to switch to the Vista or Windows 7 operating systems.
